„Respect Works Out – Mit Respekt geht’s besser!“ The right of the child to a non-violent upbringing has been a central focus for the Association for a New Education for some time. Since April 2007 we are coordinating the European project „Respect works out” in partnership with the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) in the UK and Nobody’s Children Foundation (FDN) in Poland. Its goal is to strengthen the right of the child to a non-violent upbringing and to contribute to creating an environment for children in which parents, experts and the general public fully reject the use of violence against children. We consider non-violence as the basis for a child-friendly, democratic Europe. We see the family as a team that takes diverging interests seriously and negotiates solutions that are suitable for all team members. There is no place for violence of any kind here. Highlighting the benefits of non-violent parenting is a central aim of a “letter for parents” developed by the Association for a New Education. It helps parents to understand children’s behaviour better and provides useful advice on how to avoid conflict situations getting out of control. Within the frame of the project, this letter for parents has been adapted to the country-specific context for parents in Poland and the UK. It has been disseminated to 50,000 parents in all three project countries, and parents’ response was evaluated. To root the right of the child to a non-violent upbringing also in public and political discourse, the project partners have organised different events to provide parents, professionals, policy makers and the general public with the opportunity to meet, exchange experience and to find out more about best-practice models in the field of non-violent child raising. Our internet portal www.respectworks.eu is a platform for the exchange with and amongst different organisations, institutions and initiatives in Europe, striving to create new synergies and to foster cooperation that will last beyond the project’s duration. Project partners: The project is funded by the EC Daphne Programme
